| Toshack quits Italian job ![]() John Toshack must look elsewhere for employment Former Wales coach John Toshack has resigned from his job at Italian Serie B club Catania after less than three months in charge. Toshack announced the move on Tuesday following criticism by club president Riccardo Gaucci. "I could not tolerate a lack of respect in terms of my players and my work," said the Welshman.
Catania president Gaucci was highly critical of Toshack's team selection after Monday's 1-0 defeat by Napoli. "He made us play with a Serie C defence when I have bought him reinforcements," Gaucci was quoted as saying. "He could have said something before and I would not have looked at the market." The Sicilian club are just one point clear of the relegation zone after collecting 21 points from 20 matches, but Toshack's resignation took Gaucci by surprise. "My son received a call today (Tuesday) from John Toshack saying that he is quitting," Gaucci said. In his 10 games in charge of Catania, Toshack's record reads won four matches, lost six. The former Liverpool striker has previously coached Spanish clubs Real Sociedad (three spells), Real Madrid (twice) and Deportivo La Coruna, Sporting Lisbon of Portugal, Besiktas of Turkey, St Etienne of France, and Swansea City. Toshack's replacement is expected to be experienced coach Eddy Reja. Reja, who has coached Brescia and Vicenza among other clubs, is said to be "95% certain" of getting the job according to Gaucci. | Top Europe stories now: Links to more Europe stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
