Taylor's delight for Dublin
Dion Dublin is mobbed after Aston Villa's winner
Dion Dublin is mobbed after Aston Villa's winner

Aston Villa boss Graham Taylor paid tribute to veteran striker Dion Dublin after his goal snatched a vital victory against Everton.

Substitute Dublin - who was on loan at Millwall last season - came off the bench to score the 84th minute clincher in a 3-2 win at Villa Park.

It was 33-year-old Dublin's 99th Pemiership goal, and Taylor is hoping he will be at Villa Park to complete his century.

Taylor said: "Dion's now got his 99th Premiership goal so he obviously wants another one.

"He's now got a good target to aim for - not too many strikers have 100."

Dublin's winner eased the pressure on Taylor after the derby defeat at Birmingham - and after Everton threatened to complete a remarkable comeback despite going two goals down.

And Taylor added: "To some people outside the club Dion has become partly a forgotten man.

"But he represents what I have said to everyone else in his situation such as Alan Wright or Steve Stone, and that is to be ready when your time comes."

Taylor said: "If you lose a two-goal lead at home when you have just lost the previous game to your local rivals, then your fans are not going to be very happy.

Moyes shows his frustration

"When Everton equalised it looked like only one side would win it - but I've got to give the players credit for showing great character.

"You make your own luck - but it looked like we were going to buckle."

Everton boss David Moyes confessed his side were "sick", saying: "We had got ourselves back in it but then we carelessly gave the ball away.

"We should have just continued to make Aston Villa run around and when we got back to 2-2 everyone must have thought there was only one team going to win the game.

"We got back into it - but then played terrible football.

"The winning goal was horrible, but we had quite a few mistakes before that, it was building up to it."
