Vieira appeal fails
Referee Andy D'Urso sends off Arsenal's Patrick Vieira in the game against Chelsea
Patrick Vieira finds himself in trouble again
Arsenal midfielder Patrick Vieira has lost his bid to have his red card against Chelsea overturned.

The French international had been hoping that referee Andy D'Urso would reconsider his decision to hand him a red card for two bookable offences.

But the Football Association has issued a statement on its website - www.thefa.com - confirming that Vieira will now face a one-match ban.

"Referee Andy D'Urso will not be reconsidering his decision to dismiss Vieira for two cautions" said the statement.

Vieira has no right of appeal to the FA ruling and that means he will miss the match against Bolton on 21 September.

However, he may have been rested for that game anyway as it falls between two Champions League fixtures.

Arsenal later released a statement to say the decision not to overturn Vieria's red card had been reluctantly accepted.

It read: "We fully believe that Patrick Vieira's dismissal against Chelsea was harsh and are disappointed to learn that Andy D'Urso will not be reconsidering his decision.

"Having reviewed both 'yellow card offences' we are convinced that Patrick Vieira should have remained on the field of play.

"We are mindful that referees have a difficult job making decisions in a split second but in this instance the referee made a mistake."

Meanwhile the FA will wait for D'Urso's report before deciding whether to take action against Chelsea over a bottle-throwing incident.

Shortly after Vieira was shown the red card, an object landed on the Stamford Bridge pitch.
