Lampard rescues Chelsea
Chelsea's Frank Lampard celebrates his goal in the 1-1 draw against Southampton
Lampard claims his second goal of the season
Southampton 1-1 Chelsea

Frank Lampard's astute chip 10 minutes from time earned Chelsea a point to deny Southampton their first win of the season.

Fabrice Fernandes had broken the deadlock in the 52nd minute with Southampton's first goal of the season, a thumping drive as he ran onto Chris Marsden's cross from the left.

But after Eidur Gudjohnsen had spurned a couple of excellent chances, Lampard produced a neat finish to chip Paul Jones.

On the opening day of the campaign Lampard completed another Chelsea comeback from two goals down with a late winner at Charlton.

This time, Chelsea had opened brightly with Boudewijn Zenden swapping passes with Gianfranco Zola before firing wide in the second minute.

The Dutchman spied another half chance four minutes later when he tried to get onto a through-ball from Lampard but found Paul Jones racing to the edge of his area to snatch possession.

After dominating the game's opening exchanges Chelsea were indebted to some excellent goalkeeping from Carlo Cudicini.

No more so when the Italian made an impressive reaction save to keep out James Beattie's close-range header after Marian Pahars had crossed.

Soon after Cudicini could only push away a fierce, drilled drive by Wayne Bridge.

Fernandes earned and then took the corner which almost led to a second Southampton goal on 57 minutes as Michael Svensson rose to get a downward header.

Jones soon had to go full stretch to paw away Zola's rocket shot from 25 yards for a corner to maintain Southampton's lead.

Southampton had a lucky escape two minutes later.

Set up by Zola, Gudjohnsen drove his shot wide from 10 yards when scoring looked easier.

The Icelandic forward had replaced the ineffectual Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink at the interval.

But with time running out Lampard popped up to save the blushes of manager Claudio Ranieri.
