England coach Eriksson wanted the domestic season to be halted for two weeks in January each year to help put a stop to fatigue among his players. The Swede felt tiredness was a major factor in his side's failure to get past the quarter-final stage at the World Cup. But according to the Daily Mail newspaper that has been thrown out by the clubs, who believe a break would cause fixture congestion when added to European competitions and the domestic cups.
"The chairman were queuing to reject the idea," the newspaper quoted a source as saying. "There have not been so many issues on which so many of them wanted to speak." The report also claimed that clubs believe some players endure less football than they used to, because of increased squads. It adds that the FA make 180m per year from internationals and FA Cup matches - which both require players 'borrowed' from the clubs. | Top Eng Prem stories now: Links to more Eng Prem stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
