After 82 minutes, substitute John Askey crossed for Danny Adams to head the visitors in front.

And a minute later Danny Whittaker raced clear to clinch victory when he slotted the ball home from 15 yards.

In searing heat, Macclesfield were determined to prevent Pool from chalking up their third successive win this season.

Chances were few and far between for both sides, but Hartlepool always had the edge as Macclesfield back-pedalled constantly.

Visiting goalkeeper Steve Wilson made good first-half saves from Darrell Clarke and Mark Robinson, but there was little else to show from the home attack and Macclesfield punished them with the two late goals.
