Shorunmu released by Lucerne
Ike Shorunmu saves from Gabriel Batistuta

Nigeria's World Cup goalkeeper Ike Shorunmu has been released by his Swiss club Lucerne - just three months after he joined the team in his bid to keep his place in the Super Eagles' starting line-up.

Shorunmu was the hero of Nigeria's opening World Cup game against Argentina, with his valiant efforts to deny the likes of Batistuta and Crespo keeping the score down to a respectable 1-0 defeat.

But he was dropped for the Super Eagles' last game against England, replaced by 17-year-old Vincent Enyeama.

And now he faces the prospect of finding another club.

34-year-old Shorunmu has had a torrid last 12 months, after falling out with Turkish club Besiktas over a breach of his contract terms.

Shorunmu took the club to Fifa to seek compensation - and also win his freedom - but played little football last year, and looked decidedly rusty at the African Nations Cup finals in Mali.

He did eventually win his release, but Nigerian officials warned Shorunmu he would have to find a club quickly if he wanted to keep his place in the national team for the World Cup finals in Japan.

The veteran goalkeeper spent a month searching before settling at FC Lucerne in Switzerland.

But the club have now released Shorunmu, whose family have lived in Switzerland since his 1996 when he was on the books of FC Zurich, alongside fellow Nigerian Rachidi Yekini and DR Congo's Shabani Nonda.
