| Sunday, 29 December, 2002, 09:21 GMT Legend Stubbins dies Former Liverpool and Newcastle striker Albert Stubbins has died at the age of 83. Stubbins was part of the Liverpool team which won the championship in the first League season after the Second World War. During the war, he represented his native Newcastle and was a prolific marksman for the Tyneside club. His reputation was such that both Liverpool and Everton tried to sign him, and after tossing a coin, Stubbins elected to talk to the Anfield club which resulted in a then record move of �12,500. After finishing his playing career, Stubbins moved back to the north east. |
