| Thursday, 12 December, 2002, 20:07 GMT Why the Scottish-Irish bid failed
How much did the uncertainty over Ireland's ability to deliver two stadiums damage the bid? There were other factors as well but the fact that there were potential problems didn't help. It was a case of location, location for Uefa. The fact that Scotland have three stadia in the same city (Glasgow) was not ideal. Would Scotland have stood a better chance with a single bid? They would have been given the same reasons for their failure - especially the fact that Hampden Park, Ibrox and Parkhead are all in Glasgow. The Austrian bid had eight different stadia in eight different cities, and Uefa are keen for it to be a real cultural occasion across the whole country. How much was the proximity of Euro 96 in England a factor? It was a crucial factor. Even though we differentiate between England, Ireland and Scotland, Uefa don't. They just see it as the UK and they felt it wasn't their turn. Was there an element of political voting behind the decision? A great deal and there always is. The fact that Hungary - which had built no stadiums at all - and Greece/Turkey made it into the final four shows that. It is politically expedient for Uefa to show support for an eastern European bid, without actually giving it to them. Has Uefa rewarded Austria at the third time of asking? It came at the right time for them. It was always going to be one of the smaller European countries with Germany getting the 2006 World Cup, so for many countries it was their big chance. What are the chances of another Scotland/Ireland bid for Euro 2012? They haven't committed to anything yet, and they will need a major re-think and a very different bid if they are to succeed. They need to spread the event around rather than just focus on a couple of cities. Uefa want bids which will give them the least hassle and not knowing how the Irish stadiums were going to be financed or built meant there was potential trouble there. |
