| Monday, 4 November, 2002, 13:55 GMT Rotherham dump out Dons ![]() Monkhouse (right) scored a stunning volley Wimbledon 1-3 Rotherham Rotherham gained sweet revenge over Wimbledon as they booked their place in the fourth round of the Worthington Cup in front of just 664 fans at Selhurst Park. The Millers were beaten 2-1 in their First Division encounter last Tuesday, but left the capital this time with a place in the hat for the next round.
Patrick Agyemang gave Wimbledon a 35th-minute lead but second-half goals from Andy Monkhouse, Richard Barker and Alan Lee sealed Rotherham's progress. Wimbledon could easily have had the game won in the first half as they created a number of chances. Stuart Murdoch's side, on a high after Saturday's 4-2 win over First Division promotion hopefuls Norwich, came out with all guns blazing.
And top scorer Neil Shipperley had an early shot saved by Mike Pollitt. The Rotherham goalkeeper then had to be on his toes to deny Joel McAnuff and dived to produce a smart save with his feet to keep out Agyemang. Pollitt was forced into his fourth save of the night in only the 10th minute as McAnuff tried for the second time to opening the scoring. Shortly afterwards, in a rare attack, Monkhouse fired over the crossbar while back at the other end Rob Gier did likewise. It was no surprise when Wimbledon, without weekend hat-trick hero David Connelly, took the lead in the 35th minute.
A pass from Shipperley found Agyemang to fire the ball into the back of the net from the edge of the box. Rotherham came out a lot more positively in the second period and grabbed a surprise equaliser within three minutes of the restart. A corner was cleared only as far as Monkhouse who produced a stunning 18-yard volley past the helpless Kelvin Davis.
Wimbledon should have restored their advantage almost immediately when Shipperley's shot was pushed onto a post by Pollitt. That save proved crucial as Rotherham took the lead with 15 minutes left. Monkhouse crossed from the left wing and Richard Barker was on hand to fire the ball into the bottom corner of the net. Rotherham made the game safe with five minutes left when Lee converted Nicky Daws' cross past Davis.
