Platt names U21 squad
Sunderland's Matthew Piper chases Leeds' Ian Harte
Piper recently joined Sunderland from Leicester
England U21 v Portugal U21 | Reebok Stadium | Friday, 6 September Kick-off 2000 BST | Full coverage on BBC Sport Online

David Platt has named his England Under-21 squad to play Yugoslavia at the Reebok Stadium on Friday.

The Under-21 coach has called-up Portsmouth's midfield Gary O'Neil and Sunderland's winger Matthew Piper.

The 20-year-old Piper recently signed a five-year deal with Sunderland after moving from Leicester in a 3.5m deal.

O'Neil has been impressive as Portsmouth have strode to the top of the Divsion One table.

Jermain Defoe, who many had tipped to be in the full squad, is also included in Platt's party.

Friday's game will be the first time Platt's team will have played since they crashed out of the European Championships in Switzerland during May.

Leeds' Alan Smith was one of England's few successes in that tournament and the striker's reward is a place in Sven-Goran Eriksson's squad for the international friendly against Portugal on Saturday

England Under-21 squad to face Yugoslavia at the Reebok Stadium on Friday: Ameobi (Newcastle), Barry (Aston Villa), Bramble (Newcastle), Clarke (Everton), Crouch (Aston Villa), Defoe (West Ham), Etherington (Tottenham), Evans (Chelsea), Howarth (York), Jeffers (Arsenal), Jenas (Newcastle), Kirkland (Liverpool), Konchesky (Charlton), Lescott (Wolves), O'Neil (Portsmouth), Parnaby (Middlesbrough), Pennant (Arsenal), Piper (Sunderland), Prutton (Nottingham Forest), Samuel (Aston Villa), Taylor (Portsmouth), Wright-Phillips (Manchester City).
