| Sunday, 28 July, 2002, 16:02 GMT 17:02 UK QPR beat sorry Spurs ![]() QPR 3-2 Tottenham Andy Thomson, Clark Carlisle and Matthew Rose scored as QPR defeated Spurs in a pre-season friendly at Loftus Road. Ian Holloway's team were deserved winners against a Spurs team that struggled after playing their second match in two days. Tottenham were without Teddy Sheringham, Gustavo Poyet, Dean Richards and Darren Anderton. Tim Sherwood was also missing and is widely tipped to leave White Hart Lane after publicly criticising boss Glenn Hoddle in a newspaper article.
Nevertheless, Hoddle's team were clearly second best against their Division Two opponents. The consolation for the Spurs boss came from the club's impressive youngsters, with Matthew Etherington and Ron Henry getting on the scoresheet. Spurs started well, playing some slick football, but QPR took the lead after 35 minutes. Carlisle defeated Spurs goalkeeper Neil Sullivan with an athletic header and Thomson, who had replaced Kevin Gallen after 30 minutes, slid the ball home from close range. Five minutes later, Carlisle converted a Richard Langley corner to double his team's advantage.
Milenko Acimovic almost pulled one back for the visitors early in the second half but Fraser Digby saved well. Then Tottenham substitute Ron Henry was denied on the goal-line with Digby beaten, before the impressive Etherington scored. But Spurs' hopes of a comeback were short-lived, with Rose converting after a tidy build-up involving Thomson and Wes Daly. Gary Doherty then wasted a free header for Spurs, while Henry scored a consolation goal. |
