| Friday, 12 July, 2002, 15:42 GMT 16:42 UK Pinto banned by Fifa ![]() Joao Pinto is shown the red card against South Korea Fifa, world football's governing body, has banned Portugal's Joao Pinto from football until 17 October after the player was found guilty of punching a referee. Pinto cannot play in national or club matches and has also been fined �21,700 as well as having to pay �6,500 procedural costs. Pinto committed the offence in Portugal's World Cup group game against South Korea after he was shown the red card for a tackle from behind. Fifa suspended the Sporting Lisbon player from all competition at the time. In addition to the ban, Pinto will also have a further suspended two month ban hanging over him for a year and this can be enforced if he commits a similar offence again.
