| White admits to class gap All-rounder Craig White spoke of the "massive challenge" that faces England in the second Test after Australia enjoyed another dominant day in Adelaide.
After establishing a 210-run first-innings lead, the home side reduced England to 36 for three at stumps. It left England trailing by 174 runs with two full days of cricket remaining. "It's not an ideal situation for us losing three wickets at the end," White conceded. "The people who got out are pretty down, but we've all got to front up tomorrow, it's another day and we've got to try to stay positive because we have a massive challenge ahead of us." England lost their last eight wickets in the first innings for 96 runs, with White contributing just one. "We have got a bit of batting to come. You can only do your best and try to save the Test match," White continued.
"They've proved they are the best team in the world and all we can do is try and compete against them." Ricky Ponting, who hit 154 in Australia's 552 for nine declared, said the game plan to get at England late in the day worked to perfection. "It was a nasty little session (for England to bat)," he said. "It is always hard to bat in those sort of situations when you have been out in the field for a day-and-a-half. "That was the reason behind our declaration and it worked for us." "Our main goal was to get through the morning session with as little damage as possible and we managed to do that and post a big first innings. "It was not getting any easier to bat and we still had wickets in hand and we wanted to bowl at them tonight, which is how it worked out." |
