Vaughan survived an apparent catch on 19

Michael Vaughan overcame an injury scare and enjoyed an early slice of luck to hit a confident 177 as England dominated the first day of the second Test.

But the Yorkshire batsman was out to the final ball of the evening, agonisingly short of a maiden Test double-century for the third time this year.

No other England batsman managed to pass 50, although Marcus Trescothick hit a confident 35 in an 88-run opening partnership, and Nasser Hussain contributed 47.

At stumps the tourists were 295 for four, with Mark Butcher 22 not out.

But they will remember the first Test of the series, when they slumped from a first innings 268 for three to 325 all out.

And Australian hopes will remain high against a side with a tail lengthened by the inclusion of two new bowlers.

Opener Vaughan tweaked his right knee during pre-match warm-ups but decided to play on after having the injury strapped.

He had made just 19, though, when Justin Langer appeared to take a low catch at point off the bowling of Andy Bichel, but the third umpire found replays inconclusive.

He had managed 159 more, facing 306 balls with 22 fours and two sixes off the Queensland pace man before Bichel got his revenge, gaining an edge to first slip.

For much of the day, though, Steve Waugh's side made their own bad luck, with some uncharacteristically lax close fielding.

Vaughan can add his 177 to scores of 197 and 195 against India at home in the last six months.

Having reached 50 from just 72 deliveries, he settled down during the afternoon and carded his first overseas Test century - and his fifth ton this year - taking a total of 175 balls.

Key replacement

McGrath made the first breakthrough 20 minutes before lunch, when Trescothick presented an angled bat and played onto his stumps for 35.

Robert Key, moved up the order on his Ashes debut as Butcher suffered with migraine during the morning, looked leaden-footed against Warne.

He managed a single off 22 deliveries before being caught by a juggling Ricky Ponting at silly point.

Hussain perished looking too quickly to reach his fourth half-century in as many Ashes Tests, top-edging a cut behind off Warne - a second reward in a marathon 26 overs.

England made three changes to their line-up, spinner Richard Dawson and pace bowler Steve Harmison replacing injured pair Ashley Giles and Simon Jones.

Crawley was ruled out after a morning fitness Test on a badly bruised right hip suffered in last weekend's tour match.
