| Wednesday, 3 April, 2002, 20:03 GMT 21:03 UK ICC dismisses floodlight complaints New Zealand batted on under floodlights on day four England's complaints about having to play under floodlights during the third Test against New Zealand have been dismissed by the International Cricket Council. "We must be mindful that players' careers are at stake," said ICC general manager (cricket) David Richardson said. "International players, however, will understand that whilst the traditional values of our game remain paramount, they are in the entertainment business.
"That demands flexibility and adaptability from them." England complained after their fielders struggled to see the ball as play took place under floodlights towards the end of the fourth day of the final Test, won by New Zealand. The hosts were batting and declined to leave the field despite being offered the light. "The fourth day's play in Auckland had over 400 runs and 16 wickets," said Richardson. "It is action of this kind that provides value for money and keeps the world's broadcast and print media interested in the game." The ICC ruled last year that floodlights should be used in the event of bad light to try and limit interruptions in play. |
