England have succumbed to a brilliant bowling performance by New Zealand on the final day to lose by 78 runs before tea.

The last hope for the tourists was a stand between Essex men Nasser Hussain and James Foster.

They put on on 49 for the seventh wicket, but both were removed by Andre Adams, leaving England's tail exposed with more than 40 overs left to bowl.

And there could be only one result from then on.

Things were going perfectly for England Hussain, who went on to hit 82, and Mark Butcher were together.

They took the score to 122-2 with England scoring freely.

Then Butcher was out - the first of a clutch of four wickets to fall quickly.

The left-hander was unlucky when an innocuous ball from Nathan Astle leapt off the pitch for him to be caught at point for 35.

Butcher was replaced by the other Surrey left-hander, Graham Thorpe.

The game was now finely poised as Tuffey returned for his second spell.

And, crucially, he provided Adam Parore with his 200th Test dismissal by removing England's best player for just three.

In the same over, Tuffey struck again. Flintoff was clean bowled for a duck showing leaden-footed defensive work and suddenly England had lost three wickets in nine balls.

Soon after lunch, Hussain, who was profiting from playing with a straight bat and moving his feet well, lost the out-of-sorts Mark Ramprakash for just two.

The Surrey man played inside a straight ball from Tuffey and the future of his England career is surely in jeopardy.

At the start of the day, Chris Drum was pulled for four by Marcus Trescothick and hit for an emphatic six by Michael Vaughan.

That showed that England would aim to be positive throughout the day.

But Trescothick dragged on a ball from Drum with the score on 23.

Vaughan, on 36 and seemingly in great form, was then caught at first slip trying to cut a ball that was too close to his body.

Butcher looked in top form too, playing shots square of the wicket on the off side.

And Hussain soon hit Adams out of the attack, clubbing 15 runs in one over.

After Ramprakash's sorry demise, the most optimistic England fans held out hope as Foster joined his captain at the crease.

But Adams had the student wicket-keeper caught behind after he'd produced another doughty innings, hitting 23.

The England skipper followed soon afterwards, and the end came quickly after that.

For the record, Tuffey, Drum and Adams all took three wickets on a surface that rewarded good shot-making but the bounce became progressively more uneven as the day wore on.
