| England follow Dravid lead ![]() Trescothick sweeps his way to another half century Final Test, The Oval, day four of five (close): India 508 v England 515 & 114-0 England stretched their lead to 121 over India despite a double century by Rahul Dravid in the fourth Test at The Oval. Marcus Trescothick hit a half century and took England to 114-0 at stumps with Michael Vaughan after India were dismissed for 508. But a Test that seems destined for a draw will be best remembered for Dravid's masterful 217, a knock that contained 28 boundaries in ten and a half hours of perfect concentration and technique.
He soon got into his stride in the morning with a brace of hooked fours off successive balls off Dominic Cork to pass 150 and put on 113 with the sedate VVS Laxman. He offered just one sharp chance to Ashley Giles at gully off the bowling of Alex Tudor on 168, but the innings was otherwise immaculate. Laxman ground his way to 40 before slashing Andrew Caddick to Giles at gully just before lunch. Ajit Agarkar demonstrated his growing confidence with the bat to put on 61 with Dravid, hitting a huge six off Michael Vaughan, but was bowled through the gate with the next delivery for 31. Dravid appeared set to break even more records, but was run out after a mix up with partner Ajay Ratra after posting his Test best.
Giles took the wickets of Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh soon after tea to wrap up India's first innings. Trescothick and Vaughan carried on their impressive opening partnership in style, sweeping India's spinners ruthlessly to press on England's score. Trescothick reached his second half century of the match with a hooked four off Agarkar and India resorted to negative bowling outside leg stump to keep the run rate down. Vaughan should have been run out before he opened his account, but Sourav Ganguly missed the stumps with the batsman well short of safety. Much depends on how quickly England can score if a result can be forced from the Test and the series. |
