Vaughan ton boosts England
Michael Vaughan
Vaughan was in sublime touch for his century
Second Test, Trent Bridge, day three
India 357 all out v England 341-5

Michael Vaughan hit a brilliant 197 as England closed in on India's first innings score in the second Test at Trent Bridge.

England finished the day in a commanding position having scored 341-5, just 16 runs behind India with five wickets in hand.

Vaughan was in sublime touch and clattered 23 boundaries to all parts of the ground as he compiled his fourth Test century and highest first-class score.

He was eventually out minutes from the close looking for his double ton as he aimed a tired drive at Ajit Agarkar and edged to wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel.

Robert Key
Key had an unlucky dismissal
It was Vaughan's second century in successive matches, following his 100 at Lord's, and third Test ton of the summer.

Debutant Robert Key made 17 during an opening stand of 56 with Vaughan before bottom-edging the ball on to his leg, trying to pull an Ashish Nehra delivery, only to see it trickle back on to his stumps.

Harbhajan Singh found prodigious turn with his off-breaks and regularly beat Butcher's bat.

He had Vaughan dropped on 30 by debutant Patel and fluffed an easy catch off his own bowling offered by Butcher on seven.

Indian captain Sourav Ganguly brought himself on to bowl with Vaughan in the nervous 90s, but served up some buffet bowling to allow the opener to cruise past three figures without difficulty.

Butcher put on 165 with Vaughan and made 53 before Harbhajan finally found his edge and Rahul Dravid pouched the ball at first slip.

Harbhajan Singh
Harbhajan scored his second Test half century
Harbhajan took the wicket of Nasser Hussain in his next over when the England captain gloved an attempted sweep to give Patel his first Test catch.

John Crawley edged a Zaheer Khan delivery on to his pad and the ball ballooned to gully, but Alec Stewart came in to give Vaughan support in a stand of 63.

Stewart ended the day unbeaten on 30 with Andrew Flintoff on two not out when the batsmen came off for bad light.

Earlier, Harbhajan cracked 10 boundaries in an entertaining half century, and put on 61 with Khan, as England's bowlers were frustrated by India's tail enders in the morning.

Harbhajan edged two boundaries through the slips in the first over of the day, and reached his 50 off 33 balls, before spooning a catch to Hussain at cover off the bowling of Steve Harmison for 54.

Hoggard picked up a deserved fourth wicket when Nehra edged behind to wicket-keeper Stewart to wrap up India's innings on 357.
