| Thursday, 13 February, 2003, 16:37 GMT Hayward quits SA for county
Hayward signed a deal with the county side a month ago - before he was recalled by his country - although the signing was kept secret. And the two-year deal, which begins in April, does not contain a clause allowing his release to play international cricket. "Effectively he has taken the decision not to play for his country during that time," Worcestershire chief executive Mark Newton told BBC Sport Online. South Africa tour England between June and August, playing four Tests and the one-day NatWest Series.
"It takes a lot for a player not to play for his country," he said. "Things could change." Hayward, who will now face a United Cricket Board disciplinary hearing, said he joined Worcestershire to safeguard his future. "I didn't know where I stood with South African cricket at the time and I thought I was out of the picture," said Hayward. Hayward, known as Nantie, made his Test debut against England just more than three years ago and has so far made 14 appearances. He recently achieved his best bowling figures of five for 56 in the first Test against Pakistan at Durban. "This decision of Hayward's is yet another example of the problems South African cricket is having holding onto its top performers," agent David Ligertwood said. "Hayward's decision was made principally for security and continuity reasons, as he has been in and out of the South African Test team." Worcestershire's second overseas player, South Africa all-rounder Andrew Hall, does have a get-out in his contract for international appearances. Primarily a one-day player, he could still be required for all of South Africa's tour of England. |
