| Sunday, 15 September, 2002, 17:24 GMT 18:24 UK Royals too strong for Outlaws ![]() The Royals celebrate a wicket Norwich Union League D1, Trent Bridge: Worcestershire bt Nottinghamshire by 81 runs An excellent showing from Worcestershire's batsmen saw them canter to a comfortable win at Trent Bridge. Half centuries from Ben Smith and David Leatherdale, following cameos from the top three batsmen, took them to an excellent score. But Worcestershire's winning side then had to watch Glamorgan Dragons close out a nail-biting win against the Kent Spitfires in Canterbury. And that win meant it was the Welsh county who won the Norwich Union League title. Shreck impresses For the Outlaws, who fielded a collection of youngsters and fringe players, Charlie Shreck impressed with five for 35. The opening pair of David Lucas and Nadeem Malik were expensive, however, going for a combined 124 runs in 16 overs. Nottinghamshire started poorly, with Usman Afzaal run out early on. Then Chris Read and Paul Johnson soon fell to Kabir Ali for single figure scores. And when Darren Bicknell was dismissed by Stuart Lampitt the score was 45 for four. A recovery of sorts was established by Jason Gallian (47) and Bilal Shafayat (24), but when those two were out, there was only going to be one winner. Gareth Batty finished with four for 41. Nottinghamshire: J E R Gallian (Capt), U Afzaal, D J Bicknell, P Johnson, B M Shafayat, C M W Read (Wkt), W R Smith, S J Randall, D S Lucas, M N Malik, C E Shreck. Worcestershire: V S Solanki, A Singh, G A Hick (Capt), B F Smith, S D Peters, D A Leatherdale, D J Pipe (Wkt), G J Batty, Kabir Ali, S R Lampitt, M S Mason. Umpires: I J Gould and J W Lloyds |
