| Tuesday, 3 September, 2002, 20:34 GMT 21:34 UK Goodwin leads Sharks home Norwich Union League D2, Hove: Sussex 127-3 (25.1 overs) beat Hampshire 126 (33 overs) Murray Goodwin led the way as Sussex Sharks cruised to a seven-wicket victory over Hampshire Hawks. The Hawks set the home side just 127 to win after being dismissed in just 33 overs at Hove.
The Sharks never looked like missing out on four points thanks to a classy 76 not out from Goodwin. Kevin Innes took 4-26 to help demolish Hampshire, who were left to rue an awful batting display which saw Neil Johnson top score with 26. The visitors elected to bat but had just two runs on the board when James Hamblin (1) miscued to Innes at deep mid-wicket. Zimbabwean Johnson put up a fight before he was caught at backward point attempting a square cut. Jason Laney undid his good work by going for 23, leaving his side on 58-3. The visitors crawled past 100 in the 25th and their hopes of avoiding a ninth one-day defeat all but ended when Dimitri Mascarenhas, Shaun Udal and Iain Brunnschweiler went in quick succession. Impressive partnership Hampshire lost their last five wickets for as many runs and were all out for 126. The Hawks responded perfectly by dismissing Bas Zuiderent first ball, and a seemingly hopeless position was brightened further when Jamie Carpenter (3) departed two overs later. However, captain Chris Adams came to the crease and he and Goodwin soon put their side back in control with an impressive partnership of 50. Zimbabwe international Goodwin brought up his half-century in emphatic style, smashing 11 runs from three balls to effectively put victory beyond the visitors. Hampshire took the wicket of Adams for 30 with the score on 100, but it made no difference as Goodwin and Will House (11no) completed an easy win.
