Positive Notts snatch win
Andy Harris takes a wicket
Harris enjoyed his best day for Notts
Frizzell County Championship D2, Trent Bridge, day four: Nottinghamshire 207-8 dec & 231-3 beat Northamptonshire 277 & 159 by 7 wickets
Nottinghamshire 16 pts, Northamptonshire 4

Jason Gallian's bold captaincy and batting was rewarded with victory as Notts made up for lost time at Trent Bridge.

Sunday's rain, which meant only eight overs were possible, prompted the home skipper to call a halt to their first innings at their overnight score, conceding a 70-run lead.

But Northants fell apart as Andy Harris returned career-best figures of seven for 54 and Gallian steered his side home with an unbeaten 111, aided and abetted by 88 from Usman Afzaal.

Gallian hit 18 fours and his innings finally laid injury problems to rest after knee trouble restricted him to just a single Championship appearance in 2001.

Northants began their second innings in aggressive style with Adrian Rollins hitting 60 off 58 balls and Mike Hussey collecting seven fours in his 36.

But Tony Penberthy (31) and Jeff Cook (11) were the only other batsmen to reach double figures as Harris sped through the middle order.

It left Notts to score 230 for victory and they made the worst possible start as Darren Bicknell and Guy Welton both went for nought.

Bicknell was lbw to Darren Cousins and Welton was caught behind off Carl Greenidge, but Gallian and Afzaal made light of the situation and were soon in full flow.

They put on 188 for the third wicket and both looked set for hundreds, only for Afzaal to miss out when he fell to Greenidge after gathering 13 boundaries.

His departure brought Paul Johnson to the middle and he swiiftly brought the game to an end with 25 off 21 balls.
