Hussain smites Tykes
Nasser Hussain
Hussain hit an unbeaten 136 at Chelmsford
B&H Cup quarter-final, Chelmsford: Essex 239-3 (45 overs) beat Yorkshire 237-9 (50 overs) by seven wickets

Nasser Hussain led Essex into the B&H Cup semi-finals with a sublime unbeaten century, consigning Yorkshire to defeat by seven wickets at Chelmsford.

County skipper Ronnie Irani hit the winning runs, taking the hosts past their target of 238 with five overs remaining.

But Hussain was the star, swinging his bat with gusto towards the end to finish 136 not out from 144 balls, with 18 fours and a six.

The knock passed his tournament-best 118, made for the Combined Universities against Somerset 13 years ago.

Yorkshire's star-studded seam attack were wayward throughout, Matthew Hoggard conceding 65 runs for the wicket of Darren Robinson.

The opener flicked a yorker to short midwicket having contributed 26 to a 50-run partnership in the first 10 overs.

John Stephenson was then happy to play second fiddle to Hussain in a stand of 94.

And Andy Flower contributed a cameo 22 before handing Craig White his sole success for 51 runs, top-edging a hook backward of square.

Silverwood fireworks

Yorkshire had earlier been restricted to a slightly disappointing 237 for nine despite a pyrotechnical 56 from 42 deliveries from Chris Silverwood.

By the time the pinch-hitter was dismissed by a Jon Dakin yorker in the 15th over, the Tykes had reached 84 for the loss of White early on.

But, although totemic skipper Darren Lehmann kept the runs flowing through the middle of the innings, the visitors were unable to maintain their momentum.

Lehmann and Richard Blakey added 75 for the seventh wicket, but both men fell in the 48th over attempting to make late runs off Andrew Clarke.

Lehmann's dismissal, for a 77-ball 59, came courtesy of a spectacular diving catch by Aftab Habib at deep point after a top-edged cut off Clarke.

And Blakey's innings of 34 was brought to an end when he chipped a yorker to cover.

Michael Vaughan had kept the score ticking with 32 from 35 deliveries.

And the England batsman looked in fine form before wicketkeeper Flower snatched an attempted late cut almost from the edge of his bat off Paul Grayson.

Slow left-armer Grayson was part of a mid-innings stranglehold, conceding just 35 runs for that sole wicket.

And Dakin enhanced his figures by dismissing Anthony McGrath and Gary Fellows in the space of three balls in the 30th over.

After conceding 20 runs from his first three overs he finished with three for 47.
