South Africa ousted Australia from top spot in the ICC Test Championship table with a convincing victory at Newlands.

Shaun Pollock's side took just 15 overs to collect the five wickets needed to complete a 2-0 series win with five sessions to spare.

The victory following similar clean sweeps against Bangladesh and Sri Lanka and has raised expectations that South Africa can also win the World Cup, which they will host next month.

Pakistan's disappointment was later compounded when referee Gundappa Viswanath fined the team their entire match fees for slow play on the first two days.

They resumed on 184 for five, needing to double their score to make the home team bat again.

Hopes of prolonged resistance faded when Kamran Akmal was lbw for four in Makhaya Ntini's opening over.

Ntini later wrapped things up with a nasty lifter which Mohammad Zahid could only glove to Pollock at slip, giving him figures of four for 33 and eight wickets in the match.

Pakistan were left with plenty of food for thought after a disappointing tour, which also saw them lose the one-day series 4-1.

But there was consolation in the form of opener Taufeeq Umar, who made scores of 135 and 67 on the third day.

The dismissal of Akmal was exactly the start South Africa wanted and Ntini followed up by finding the edge of Faisal Iqbal's bat, with Pollock taking the catch to dismiss him for 11.

Waqar Younis was trapped in front by Nantie Hayward for nine and Saqlain Mushtaq was then run out after he and Mohammed Sami found themselves together in the middle of the wicket.

It was only a matter of time with the last pair at the crease and Zahid had no answer to the first ball of Ntini's next over - the paceman taking the Man of the Series award.
