| Friday, 3 January, 2003, 13:28 GMT Pakistan face survival battle ![]() Dippenaar batted solidly for South Africa Second Test, Cape Town, day two (stumps): Pakistan 141-1; South Africa 620-7 dec Pakistan's batsmen showed some overdue resilience but they still face a massive task to avoid a 2-0 series defeat. Taufiq Umer and Younis Khan shared an unbroken century stand as the tourists reached 141-1 at the close, still 479 runs behind. After a record-breaking first day, the home side's total was just two runs short of their record of 622 for nine set against Australia in 1969-70. Pakistan succeeded in slowing the scoring rate, but half-centuries by Boeta Dippenaar and Neil McKenzie piled on the agony. And home skipper Shaun Pollock added a final flourish before making the declaration as he hammered two sixes and four fours in making 36 not out off 19 balls. Four Pakistan bowlers gave away more than 100 runs, and spinner Saqlain Mushtaq had figures of three for 237 from 50 overs.
After seeing 445 runs conceded on the first day, Pakistan skipper Waqar Younis took the new ball at the start of play. It brought an initial reward as paceman Mohammad Sami trapped Jacques Kallis lbw on the back foot for 31. But that was their only success as Dippenaar and McKenzie, the latter with a point to prove after being left out of the World Cup squad, avoided unnecessary risks. They added 85 for the fifth wicket before McKenzie edged a ball from Mohammad Zahid to wicket-keeper Kamran Akmal for 51. Mark Boucher was bowled by Saqlain for seven, and the bowler picked up another reward when he ended Dippenaar's four-hour vigil by having him caught behind for 62. The South African bowlers found the wicket just as unresponsive as Taufiq and Salim Elahi launched Pakistan's reply with some steady batting. But Pollock separated the two openers with the score on 36 when Salim was caught at slip by Smith for 10. They were unable to achieve further success in the final two hours of play with Taufiq reaching the close on 85 not out, after being dropped on 42 by McKenzie, and Younis on 44.
