South Africa are on course for an emphatic victory despite excellent batting by Taufeeq Umar and Yousuf Youhana at Newlands.

Opener Taufeeq made 135 in Pakistan's first innings, and then added 67 more after they had been forced to follow-on.

There was entertainment late in the day as Youhana hit the second fastest half century in Test history off 27 balls.

But he then gave a catch to mid-on, the last act of the day's play, and Pakistan still need another 184 to avoid an innings defeat.

The tourists lost their last eight first innings wickets for 44 runs earlier in the day after reaching 208 for two.

Taufeeq, who began the day 85 not out, had to endure a drinks break on 99 before finally progressing to his third Test century with a single to long leg.

But Pakistan's collapse began after paceman Nantie Hayward dismissed Inzamam-ul-Haq (32) and Youhana with successive balls.

Once Taufeeq had gone, the first of four victims for Makhaya Ntini, the innings went into sharp decline with the last five batsmen contributing only a single between them.

Just six overs after his dismissal, Taufeeq found himself walking out to bat again at the start of the second innings.

Wild shot

Pakistan trailed by 368 and could ill afford a rash hook shot by Salim Elahi which skied the ball to Boeta Dippenaar at mid-wicket.

Youhana hit four successive fours off Boje

Worse followed as Younis Khan followed for two, but Taufeeq and Inzamam prevented Pakistan going into terminal decline by adding 121 in 27 overs.

The partnership came to an end when Inzamam was stumped off left-arm spinner Nicky Boje for 60 and Taufeeq fell to a perfect off-cutter by Pollock in the next over.

Youhana decided aggression was the best policy and took 24 off one over from Boje on his way to 50, but tried one big hit too many two balls later and Kallis took the catch.
