Zaheer Khan and Anil Kumble claimed four wickets each as the visitors were bowled out for 157 - 300 runs short of India's first-innings tally.
Middle-order batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul top-scored with 54, but he was afforded scant support from his colleagues as the last six wickets fell for 54 runs. West Indies made a better fist of things second time around, reaching 91 for the loss of Wavell Hinds at the close of play. But with their deficit standing at 209, Carl Hooper's men face a mountainous task to save this Test match. West Indies, resuming the day on 33 for two, added only 10 runs before the first wicket of the day fell. Kumble trapped Ramnaresh Sarwan lbw with a ball that kept low on a Wankhede Stadium wicket with uneven bounce. Sarwan had managed to add just two runs to his overnight 20. Celebrated Nightwatchman Merv Dillon fended off India's celebrated slow bowlers for a while. He hit Harbhajan straight down the ground for the day's first boundary and then hit Kumble for a six over long on. But Javagal Srinath, making his return for India after announcing his retirement from Test cricket in June, bowled Dillon with a ball that nipped in from outside off stump. Hooper fell shortly after lunch, mis-hooking the rapidly improving Zaheer to be caught at fine leg for 23. Tail up Zaheer had his tail up and removed Ryan Hinds and Ridley Jacobs for single figure scores to make it 123-7. Mahendra Nagamootoo helped Chanderpaul add 22 for the eighth wicket before he was dismissed by Kumble for nine and Pedro Collins then fell for a duck in the same over. Kumble finished the job shortly after tea, removing Chanderpaul caught and bowled. Chris Gayle and Wavell Hinds put on 60 for the first second-innings wicket before Singh bowled the latter for a 34-ball 40. Gayle was more circumspect, finishing the day unbeaten on 34 with Sarwan (nine not out) for company. |
