| | Monday, 23 September, 2002, 23:11 GMT 00:11 UK Vaughan takes the plaudits  Vaughan (right) receives the award from Matthew Fleming England batsman Michael Vaughan has been named Professional Cricketers' Association Player of the Year after his golden international summer. The Yorkshire opener was awarded the prize at this year's ceremony at the Grosvenor Park Hotel in London. Vaughan scored 900 runs in Tests against Sri Lanka and India this summer, including four centuries. He twice narrowly missed out on reaching a maiden double-century as he and Indian batsman Rahul Dravid fought to be the top run scorer in the four match series.
Over the course of the summer, he improved his Test average from 31 to 47 and is now set to take on the Australians in harness with Marcus Trescothick, who won the award in 2000. Although his contribution to Yorkshire's indifferent season was minimal due to international commitments, Vaughan did help them win the C&G Trophy, scoring 31 in the final and sharing an important stand of 93 with Matthew Elliott. There was also good news for Worcestershire's paceman Kabir Ali who received the Young Player of the Year award. Kabir has enjoyed a productive season taking 71 wickets as his county fought hard for promotion from division two of the County Championship. He also claimed 21 scalps in the National League at an average of 26, where the Royals missed out on the title by two points. Kabir's reward is a berth in the Academy squad in Australia through the winter. | |
