The issue will be the main topic for discussion when the Asian Cricket Federation, the Council's financial wing, meets in London on 25 June and again at the main ACC meeting five days later. "Top of the agenda in all these meetings will be the revival of cricket between Pakistan and India," said ACC secertary Zakir Hussain Syed. The Indian government will not allow the national side to play Pakistan because of political differences over dipsuted territory in Kashmir, which has resulted in a military build-up on the border between the two countries. The last time the two sides met was in an Asian Cup game in Dhaka, Bangladesh two years ago.
Some Indian newspapers reported last week that India might not play in the International Cricket Council (ICC) Champions Trophy in Sri Lanka in September and next year's World Cup in South Africa. But the ACC believes there is no substance to the claims. "The reports of India not playing major competitions like the World Cup and ICC Champions Trophy are not realistic," Syed said. "India can't isolate itself from international cricket and to play in all international events is a commitment of the ICC member countries. "The ACC feels India must play a leadership role for the betterment of cricket in Asia." An Indian Olympic Association official Suresh Kalmadi visited Pakistan in March amid hopes of the revival of cricketing competitions but no breakthrough was achieved. "Pakistan is in a difficult position at the moment with teams showing concerns over security and this matter can also be handled through cooperation in the ACC," Syed added. "Cricket is otherwise prospering in Asia. Hong Kong, Malaysia, Nepal, Singapore and the UAE are coming up but a standoff between Pakistan and India is harming the cause." | See also: 08 Mar 02 | Cricket 06 Feb 02 | Cricket 31 Jan 02 | Cricket 14 Jul 01 | Cricket 23 May 01 | South Asia Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Cricket stories now: Links to more Cricket stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
