![]() | Friday, 8 March, 2002, 19:02 GMT India 'refuse Pakistan invitation' ![]() Pakistan have not played India for two years Plans for an exhibition match to celebrate 50 years of cricket in Pakistan have been scuppered by India, according to reports. Indian authorities have rejected an invitation from their neighbours because they feel the timing is inappropriate. "Certainly, this is not the time for resumption of such cricket ties," Indian foreign ministry spokeswoman Nirupama Rao was quoted as saying on Friday. Pakistan played its maiden Test in the Indian capital Delhi in 1952, when the new boys crashed to defeat by an innings and 70 runs. But military action in the disputed territory of Kashmir has seen the Indian government refuse to allow its side to play their neighbours in the last two years. India were forced to cancel a scheduled tour of Pakistan a year ago and they were also pulled out of this season's Asian Test Championship. The moves cost the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) an estimated 20m. And an Indian Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson told reporters in Delhi that there is no re-think on the resumption of cricketing ties with Pakistan. "As far as cricket is concerned India's stand on the issue is very clear," the spokesperson said. "There can be no resumption unless Pakistan takes concrete steps on the ground to end infiltration as well as cross-border terrorism." | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Other top Cricket stories: Links to more Cricket stories are at the foot of the page. | ||
