| Monday, 28 October, 2002, 13:11 GMT Italian job beckons for Cook ![]() Jason 'the Power' Cook will make his second defence of the European lightweight title against mandatory challenger Stefano Zoff of Italy on 25 January. The fight will be held at the Bridgend Recreation Centre. The 36-year-old Zoff is the former WBA world lightweight champion. Cook claimed his crown against another Italian, Sandro Casamonica. He took the fight against Casamonica on the Italian's home turf with four days notice and, despite being an 11-1 underdog, climbed off the floor to stop his opponent with a punishing left hook in the third. He defended the belt with an impressive display against France's Nasser Lakrib on Saturday. It has been a remarkable year for the 27-year-old former postman who has turned his life around after a jail sentence for credit card fraud. Cook was an ABA champion and Commonwealth Games silver medalist as an amateur, and before the prison term was making a name for himself as a hard-punching pro. His only defeat came in his sixth fight against awkward Birmingham journeyman Trevor Smith, a bigger man who stopped Cook in the first. The Welshman has now won five fights since his prison release and his professional record stands at 19-1. He is looking to step up to challenge for world honours within a year, and has touted the possibility of bringing outstanding WBC lightweight champion Floyd Mayweather to an open-air bout at the Maesteg rugby ground. |
