The Irishwoman finished 12th, nearly seven minutes behind eventual winner Joyce Chepchumba.
The 32-year-old, who won October's Great North Run, where Chepchumba finished third, fell off the pace at the 16-mile mark and never recovered. "I don't know if I will do another one," she said. "All I want to do now is have a holiday and a long rest." As Olympic bronze medallist Chepchumba celebrated adding the New York crown to the London and Chicago wins she had previously recorded, O'Sullivan was fighting back the tears.
"My legs were getting stiff as I'm not used to running that slow, even in training," said O'Sullivan. "I suppose inexperience does come into it. "Now I'm thinking I should have gone off and ran my own race instead of staying with the pack where I wasn't comfortable. "With hindsight, knowing what pace I can run at, I should have gone off much quicker. "But everyone had been telling me to take things easy." |
