Devonish clocked a personal best of 20.18s, passing Campbell in the last 20 metres to take the title. Christian Malcolm was third while Dwain Chambers had a diabolical run and walked over the line some way off the pace. Devonish said: "That was brilliant. That is the best I have run. "I was trying to do that all year and it's nice to come together, especially at the trials."
Doug Turner failed to make the start after being disqualified for two false starts. Chris Rawlinson was pushed to the limit in the 400m hurdles, but managed to win the AAAs title for the fourth successive year. The Rotherham-born runner booked his ticket to next month's European Championships in Munich with victory in 48.68 secs at the Norwich Union Trials at Alexander Stadium. Rawlinson's time was just 0.1 secs outside the championship record set by America's, Ed Moses, back in 1979. The 30-year-old will be joined in Germany by Sale's Anthony Borsumato who sliced 0.3 secs off his career best to finish second in 48.90secs and move to sixth on the British all-time list. The duo were level going into the final hurdle but Rawlinson pulled away in the home straight to retain his title. Kelly Holmes shook off her previous injury woes with an electric run in the 1500m.
The Kent athlete, facing a tough field, kicked out for the line with 300m to go to win comfortably and clinch her third AAA title. Kelly Morgan pulled off the most impressive result off the track in the women's javelin. The 22-year-old from Dover threw a career-best 64.87, smashing the British record in the process. The result moved her to number two in the world rankings. Timothy Benjamin put in a sensational late burst in the 400m to push Sean Baldock and Jared Deacon into second and third respectively. Elsewhere, John Wild produced a stunning finish in the home straight to win the 5,000m in 13:52.59. |
