Whitlock facing two-year ban
Janine Whitlock clears the bar in the pole vault
Whitlock is a leading contender for a gold medal
UK Athletics has confirmed that Janine Whitlock has failed an anabolic steroids test.

The English pole-vaulter, a leading contender for a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games, could now face a two-year ban.

Under UK Athletics rules, the 28-year-old Whitlock cannot be suspended until the case has been examined by a drugs advisory officer.

But the news that she has tested positive is a huge blow with the Commonwealth Games in Manchester due to start on 25 July.

Whitlock tested positive for the steroid methandienone at the Commonwealth Games trials on 16 June.

She has until 19 July to request that the B sample is tested.

An independent drug advisory officer (DAO) has been appointed to review whether there is a case to answer.

If there is a case to answer then Whitlock will be suspended pending the result of the independent disciplinary committee.

UK Athletics has also revealed that Perriss Wilkins, who leads the men's discus rankings, was suspended on 11 June after testing positive for the same drug.
