| Saturday, 13 July, 2002, 20:19 GMT 21:19 UK The demise of the AAAs
Live coverage of the Norwich Union European Trials and AAA Championships on BBC2 from 1700 BST to 2000 on Sunday, 14 July. That was one of the weakest days in AAAs history that I have ever seen. There was a little bit of drama but, on the whole, there was not a lot to shout about unlike recent years. It really was disappointing and maybe just a step too far for a lot of our athletes. The European Championships qualifying is tough, a lot of people have struggled to reach that and it will be interesting to see what sort of a team we get together for the championships.
The problem is that it is difficult for an athlete to peak twice in a season and the Commonwealth Games is, as it should be, the number one goal for most of these athletes. Of the athletics itself in Birmingham on Saturday, I was a little surprised to see how well Darren Campbell ran in the 100m. I honestly did not think he had it in him, at this stage, to run quite that fast. His second place was definitely the story of the day. People may be surprised, on the other hand, that Iwan Thomas failed to qualify for the final of the 400m but I would have to say I was not. He was hoping to find a little extra like Darren but it just was not there. He has had the most abysmal three or four years and was in the tougher of the two semi-finals and subsequently failed to make the grade. Whether Iwan will bounce back remains to be seen - that's up to him. And, although I have not talked to him too much, one or two athletes have and said he is getting increasingly down at not being able to find the answers. It is difficult to get continually motivated when things are not going your way.
But if things click at the Commonwealth Games it might all change for Iwan. He is still a good 400m runner and I hope he can come back because he is such a talented athlete. It would be a shame if this summer is the last time we see him. One athlete who is clearly going nowhere is Ashia Hansen. She has been in electric form and she just gets better all the time. I do not think she has yet peaked - that will come at the European Championships and the Commonwealth Games. Her win in Birmingham was very impressive as she had no more than two hours sleep the previous night, having competed in Rome. She was pushed all the way by Cuba's Yamile Aldama who could be on the verge of becoming a British athlete and that can only be good for British triple jumping. I look forward to what is in store from both of them. |
