New senior national champion Brett Hawthorn leads the men's team in a seven-strong Wales Commonwealth Games wrestling squad for Delhi.

"I'm chuffed to bits to be selected, it's a dream come true," he said.

The 19-year old from Wrexham is set to take up a scholarship at Campbellsville in Kentucky, one of America's most renowned wrestling colleges.

Welsh rugby international Non Evans captains the women's team, her third sport in her second Games.

Evans starred for Wales at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in the weightlifting and judo squads.

She will be the first female to compete in three different sports at the Games.

The 35-year-old won the under-59kgs class at the Welsh Championships before her British silver medal last month.

Full-back Evans is also set to add to her 75 caps for the Welsh women's rugby team when they appear in next month's World Cup.

Also on the wrestling team in Delhi will be 23-year-old Craig Pilling, who was named British senior wrestling champion in 2006, Wrexham's Kiran Manu and the current Welsh number one, Damion Arzu from Newtown.

Completing the squad are 23-year-old Kate Rennie from Cardiff and Bridgend's Sarah Connolly, who have both made the transition from successful judo players to Commonwealth Games-bound wrestlers.

Coaching the squad will be a husband and wife team, Alan and Sue Jones from Llanfyllin near Welshpool.

Team Wales' Chef de Mission Chris Jenkins said: "We're really excited to welcome [the wrestling squad] into the Team Wales fold.

"Wrestling is our eighth team to be announced and momentum is really starting to build; we're really excited to get out there and start performing."

Up to 8,000 competitors from 71 countries - including up to 200 Welsh athletes - will compete in 17 sports in the 2010 Games from October 3-14.

Wales won 19 medals at the Melbourne Games four years ago.
