Wimbledon diary: day nine
By Caroline Cheese and Alex Perry
BBC Sport at Wimbledon

Counting on Buster

It seems that Britain's juniors may well have been taking lessons from their senior counterparts.

Joshua Goodall was the only player to get past the second round in the boys' singles, but his interest was ended by top seed Tomas Berdych from the Czech Republic.

And it was a similar story in the girls' singles as Kate O'Brien was the only player to get past the first round, but she also fell in round three to Finland's Emma Laine.

So it looks like the search for the next Tim Henman will have to carry on for a few years more.

Still, at least we still have Buster Mottram and Colin Dowdeswell to cheer on in the 45 and over gentlemen's invitation doubles.

Where were you Cliff?

The rain finally made its presence felt at Wimbledon on Wednesday - nine days into the Championships.

And there was even more disappointment for the Centre Court crowd.

Cliff Richard, who famously entertained the fans a few years ago with a few renditions of his hits, made his appearance on Tuesday when the weather was a good deal kinder.

Thankfully, no one thought to hand the microphone to the only famous face in the Royal Box on Wednesday - football pundit Jimmy Hill.

More weather woe

The All England Club are usually pretty accurate with the weather predictions.

So when an announcement boomed throughout the grounds on Wednesday that the skies were brightening and play was expected to begin shortly, ticket-holders rushed to find their seats.

But just a few minutes later, the heavens opened and those foolhardy spectators who had made their way to the uncovered stand on Centre Court were caught in the heaviest downpour of the day.

Tiger burning not so bright

The tabloid newspapers had a field day on Wednesday with images of 'Tiger' Tim Henman, and one of them took it a step further.

A journalist dressed up in full tiger costume was planted on Henman Hill to cheer on the battling Brit.

But as Henman's hopes faded against Sebastien Grosjean, so the furry suit began to look more and more bedraggled after the SW19 downpours.

Still, a quick blow dry on Wednesday evening and perhaps it might follow that Henman will roar back for victory on Thursday.
