Pullin: Hoping 10 will be her lucky number |
Tenth time lucky?
You have to feel just a little sorry for Britain's Julie Pullin, who lost in the first round for the ninth time.
The only time she did not go out in round one was 1996 - when she did not play at all.
"It's not that I can't play on grass," she said. "Two or three of the matches were very close.
"Everybody has tournaments that are bad for them, and unfortunately it is this one for me."
Lucky break
Souvenir hunters can have a field day at Wimbledon as long as their pockets are deep enough.
But one lucky boy picked up a rather unique one for free.
He emerged with one of Xavier Malisse's rackets after the Belgian's match against Cyril Saulnier.
QUOTE OF THE DAY I'm very well. How are you? Tim Henman answers possibly the least challenging question he has ever been posed in a news conference |
Malisse went down in the semi-finals to David Nalbandian last year, but found it harder going this time, crashing in straight sets to Frenchman Cyril Saulnier.
Which probably explains why the racket looked like it had been sat on by Vanessa Feltz.
Keep off the grass
Verkerk: Parisian high, London low |
Martin Verkerk blitzed his way to the final of the French Open on the back of a truckload of aces from his massive serve.
With Verkerk drawn to face Tim Henman in round three, one question begged to be asked.
If the Dutchman could serve his way to success on clay, would anyone stand a chance against him on grass?
Robin Soderling, ranked 155 in the world, was the first to find out - and promptly beat the Dutchman 6-3 6-4 6-7 6-1.
Bowing out
Andre Agassi walked out on to Centre Court and for the first time was not required to bow towards the Royal Box.
But the world number one might have started up an all-new trend.
As the crowd cheered his arrival, Agassi responded with what looked very much like a Royal wave.
And afterwards he had words to say about the decision to end the tradition of bowing.
"It was a nice tradition that I enjoyed so I'm a little bit disappointed," he said.
"I mean, how often do you get to bow to somebody?"
