Women's round-up
Clijsters is seeded to meet Serena Williams in the final |
Second seed Kim Clijsters wasted little time in booking her place in the third round. The Belgian crushed Germany's Marlene Weingartner 6-2 6-2 to set up a third-round match against 30th-seeded Paola Suarez, who beat Corina Morariu 6-1 6-1.
But Venus Williams' progress was far from easy as she dropped the second set to Australia's Evie Dominikovic before recovering for a 6-3 4-6 6-2 win.
However, Jelena Dokic's poor form continued as the 10th seed was dumped out 6-4 3-6 2-6 by Slovenia's Tina Pisnik.
The 20-year-old has lost more matches than she has won this year.
"I'm struggling with my form and nothing seems to be working," she said.
Former world number one Lindsay Davenport was unconvincing in a 7-5 6-1 win over Iroda Tulyaganova.
Davenport is playing in Paris for the first time in three years, and although she was well below her best she was still too strong for her Uzbek opponent.
Tulyaganova should have taken the first set when she found herself 40-love ahead on Davenport's serve at 5-4 but the American recovered and broke in the next game to take the opening set.
In the second set Tulyaganova's game fell apart and Davenport took full advantage to race through it.
"It wasn't a very high, high level of play out there," Davenport admitted.
"It was one of those days where you're lucky your opponent doesn't play great and you're lucky to get through. I just kind of did what I had to do."
The sixth seed goes on to face Nathalie Dechy in the third round after the Frenchwoman defeated Gala Leon Garcia 6-3 6-4.
Jennifer Capriati, the seventh seed and 2001 champion, progressed with a routine 6-3 6-0 win over Marion Bartoli of France.
Capriati will next face either 32nd seed Francesca Schiavone of Italy or Ukrainian qualifier Julia Vakulenko for a place in the last 16.
