The 19-year-old Krasnoroutskaya raced up the rankings in 2003.

She started the season outside the world's top 120, but ended it at number 27 after a string of impressive results.

Krasnoroutskaya reached the last eight at the Pan Pacific Open in February before losing to Monica Seles - her best performance in a Tier 1 event.

But she really seized the attention of a world audience in August by beating world number one Kim Clijsters en-route to the final of the Canadian Open.

It made her the first Russian to reach a Tier 1 final since Elena Dementieva in 2001, but she was eventually beaten by world number one Justine Henin-Hardenne.

Krasnoroutskaya's favourite surface is grass and she won through to the last 16 at Wimbledon in 2001.

But her best Grand Slam result was at the 2001 French Open, where she reached the quarter-finals.

However, her record at the Australian Open is dismal - she has not won a match in the first-round proper in Melbourne in three attempts.

The Russian is still waiting for her first WTA Tour singles title, but she clinched the doubles title at Hertogenbosch in June with compatriot Dementieva.
