Dementieva returned to the world's top 10 in 2003 after an absence of two years, and looks set to stay this time. The Russian first burst onto the scene in 2000, finishing the year 12th in the world after reaching the US Open semi-finals and winning a silver medal at the Olympics.
However, the following two seasons proved disappointing and it was not until Amelia Island last April that she won her first tour title.
Daniela Hantuchova, Justine Henin-Hardenne and Lindsay Davenport were beaten in the space of three days, and the 22-year-old has since gone from strength to strength.
Her powerful baseline game took Dementieva to the last 16 at the US Open and successive titles followed in Bali and Shanghai.
While her first target for 2004 will be to overtake Ana Myskina and become Russian number one, she needs to improve her record against the world's top five players.
