Tanasugarn, who made her WTA debut back in 1993, finally won her first tour title last February in Hyderabad.
Up until then her main successes had come on the doubles court, where she has won five WTA titles.
The 26-year-old boasts a solid, if unspectacular, record in Grand Slam events.
She has reached the last 16 at Wimbledon in four of the last five seasons and got to the fourth round at the Australian Open in 1998.
But Tanasugarn is a huge star back home in Thailand and carried the flag for the country at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.
Her father was also a noted athlete, competing in Thailand's basketball team and featuring in the Olympic Games in the 1960s.
Tanasugarn, who is an all-court player equally adept at the net or baseline, was born in Los Angeles and holds joint Thai and US citizenship.
