Schnyder may not quite live up to her predecessor Martina Hingis as Swiss number one, but the Basel-born player showed last year she is not far off the highest level. Formerly guided by Hubert Choudury, Schnyder heads into 2004 without a coach but on the back of something of a renaissance year.
She has eight career titles to her name and a respectable record at all the Grand Slams bar Wimbledon, where she has never made the third round.
It is six years since Schnyder's best year when she made the last eight at the French and US Opens and the last 16 in Australia.
That pushed her up to a career-high ranking of 11 in early 1999 and although the 25-year-old has not maintained that level, she remains a consistent performer.
Four quarter-finals and two semi-finals kept her close to the top 20 last year, and that was despite a wrist problem forcing her to miss much of the American hardcourt season.
A fourth appearance in the last 16 suggested she is not to be discounted at the Australian Open.
