Despite so many talented Russian women bursting onto the scene at the same time, Zvonareva still managed to stand out in 2003. At 19 years old she is among the younger players in the group but she has already proved to be a match for the biggest names in the game.
It was the dramatic three-set win over Venus Williams in the fourth round of the French Open that really brought the Muscovite to world attention.
The American avenged the defeat at Wimbledon a few weeks later, but the fact that Zvonareva made the last 16 on grass was in itself impressive.
Away from the Grand Slams there was plenty more success as she reached nine quarter-finals, two semi-finals and won her first tour title in Bol, Croatia, in April.
The year ended with four straight defeats and the disappointment of losing to France in the Fed Cup in her home town, but there looks to be plenty more to come.
