After 14 years on the tour, Rubin is more of a contender now than at any stage of her career. It is no surprise that she is showing signs of wear and tear, but she is a regular in the latter stages of tournaments and a top-10 fixture.
The American made her Grand Slam debut aged 14 at the 1990 US Open and progressed steadily to a top-10 place in 1996.
However, a series of career-threatening injuries led to a slump that she only recovered from last year.
Rubin had a superb season in 2003, winning titles in Madrid and Eastbourne.
Despite a disappointing first-round exit at the US Open, she finished the season well enough.
There were successive finals in September, another in October and an excellent win over Amelie Mauresmo at the Tour Championship in November.
Rubin has an all-court game that can trouble anyone but needs to improve her Grand Slam record, with a solitary semi-final appearance at the Australian Open in 1996.
