The fact that Myskina is the number one Russian is in itself proof of her quality. The 22-year-old needed to win four titles last year just to fight off the likes of Elena Dementieva, Nadia Petrova and Vera Zvonareva.
Victory over Kim Clijsters and Justine Henin-Hardenne on her way to claiming the Leipzig title was the highlight of the year, and she went on to win in Moscow the following week.
She also picked up tournament victories in Doha and Sarasota but disappointed at the end-of-season Tour Championships and Fed Cup final.
Like most of her fellow Russians, Myskina has a tidy game from the back of the court, and also has a neat touch at the net.
The next step is to make an impact at Grand Slam level by getting past the last eight, as well as scoring a first win over either of the Williams sisters.
