Clijsters had a magnificent year in 2003 and yet finished the season still without the prize that she desires most - a first Grand Slam title. The Belgian completed her phenomenal rise since bursting on to the scene in 2001 by claiming the number one ranking in August.
In addition, she won an incredible nine tournaments during the season, including a successful defence of her Tour Championships crown in November.
However, it cannot be ignored that much of Clijsters' success last year came in the absence of the Williams sisters.
And with Venus making her comeback in Melbourne and Serena following soon after, there is a danger that Clijsters may have missed her chance.
With compatriot Justine Henin-Hardenne seemingly having the edge in their personal rivalry Clijsters will have to find another level to fight off three daunting opponents.
