Guernsey's Heather Watson has set her sights on breaking into the world's top 100 in women's singles.

Watson, who is ranked at 176, lost 6-4 7-5 against Peng Shuai of China in her first ever WTA quarter-final at the Auckland Classic on Thursday.

The 18-year-old told BBC Guernsey: "My target for 2011 is to make the top 100.

"But it gets harder and harder to climb the ladder the closer you get because the points between each individual player jump more."

Watson's next challenge will see her enter the qualifying rounds of the Australian Open, aiming for a place in the main draw at Melbourne.

"I'm going straight to Melbourne now," she said.

"I didn't get into the tournaments at Sydney or Hobart, but that's ok because I'm tired anyway."
