Robson has looked good in her two matches so far |
Britain's Laura Robson eased into the last 16 of the girls' singles at the US Open with a straight-sets win over American Chanelle van Nguyen. The 16-year-old eighth seed looked in good form as she earned a hard fought 6-3 7-6 (7-3) victory. But there was no luck for Oliver Golding who was beaten by 16th seed Mitchell Frank in the boys' singles. George Morgan, who reached the boys' doubles final at Wimbledon, also lost to Slovakia's Filip Horansky. Robson, a semi-finalist last year, was pushed hard by her American opponent, with a single break of serve proving enough to win the opening set. She broke early in the second set but was pegged back before coming through the tie-break to set up a meeting with another home player Robin Anderson in the last 16. Golding, the winner of doubles gold at last month's Youth Olympics in Singapore and a semi-finalist at Junior Wimbledon, battled hard in the first set against his American opponent He broke at the start of the second but could not hold on to his advantage and lost six games in succession to crash out 6-4 6-2 while Morgan was beaten 6-3 6-3. But both Golding and Morgan made amends by winning their doubles matches in champions tie-breaks. Golding and his Czech partner Jiri Vesely, the fourth seeds, beat US pair Daniel Kosakowski and Dennis Novikov 4-6 6-3 10-6 while Morgan and France's Mathias Bourgue defeated Canada's Pavel Krainik and Giammarco Micolani of Italy 4-6 6-3 10-5.
